Power 88 16 Years Ago
Can you remember what life was like 16 years ago? Candidate Bill Clinton was on the road to the Democratic presidential nomination. Germany held its first Winter Olympics since World War Two. Johnny Carson hosted his last Tonight Show. Compact discs finally surpassed cassette tapes as the preferred medium for recorded music. And most importantly, Alabama won a national football championship!
Can you remember what you were doing 16 years ago? We do. Sweat was rolling off hard-working engineers and management was busily trying to put the final pieces of the puzzle into place for the start up of a new FM radio station. What should we call it? The decision was made to give it a strong, forceful name. We selected Power 88. And we gave it a slogan to match: We know where the real power comes from.
16 years have passed since we flipped the switch and life has changed. You probably didn’t work on a computer back then or have a hundred television channels to click through at home. Power 88 has changed, too. The style of music, the voices on the air, the musical artists are all different.
16 years is a long time. Long enough for a child to move from the playpen to the driver’s seat. One thing hasn’t changed over that time. We know where the real power comes from. Power may be in the name but it’s His power, not ours.
Our job is only to reflect His light to a dark and hurting world. Our goal is to bring the power of His grace and love into the lives of listeners. Our ministry is going wherever those listeners are… sitting on the living room floor with family playing games or sitting on a bed alone, staring at a loaded gun.
With your help, we can be there with those who are hurting and say, “There is reason to go on! There is hope. There is someone who cares!”
Do you have that vision? It captured our imaginations and swept us away 16 years ago. Every day someone will hear the good news through Power 88. And everyone who has supported this ministry with a gift, no matter how small, has a part in that outreach.
The average church has less than 250 people regularly attending. Even at most mega-churches, there are fewer than 4000 on a given Sunday morning. Every week, our radio stations reach many more people..in their automobile, others in the home or office, some at the beach.
While Power 88 can in no way replace the local church, we can bring people from different churches together, and work hand-in-hand with pastors and leaders from many churches to keep believers closer to their fellow brethren and the truths that keep them close.
There’s only one question left. Do you know where the REAL POWER comes from?
